What is a Porsche 911 Backdate?

A Porsche 911 backdate is the art of taking a later-model, air-cooled Porsche—typically a robust 1980s G-Series or a 1990s 964—and meticulously retrofitting the bodywork to echo the iconic, long-hood design of the early 1970s F-Models (such as the legendary 911 ST or Carrera 2.7 RS).

Why do this? Original 1970s cars are beautiful, but they lack modern rust protection, feature outdated electrical systems, and offer much less horsepower. By backdating a later chassis, you get the romantic, vintage aesthetic of a classic racer combined with the blistering performance, reliability, and precision of a modernized sports car.

At Shoreline, a backdate is not just a cosmetic fiberglass kit. It is a complete, body-off restoration and re-engineering process resulting in a hand-built masterpiece.

Custom Woven Leather Porsche 911 Interior

Uncompromising Performance

Power should never come at the cost of character. We upgrade the original Porsche powertrains to a 3.8L air-cooled flat-six with a dedicated performance pack. This is mated to a rebuilt 6-speed manual transmission and a new hydraulic clutch, ensuring every shift feels heavy, mechanical, and deeply satisfying.

But the magic of a backdate happens inside the cabin. We completely reimagine the interior using bespoke woven leather, Nappa leather dashboards, and Alcantara headliners. We honor the vintage aesthetic with MOMO Prototipo steering wheels and alloy gauge bezels, while subtly integrating modern necessities like electric air conditioning, LED lighting, and PCCM Classic systems with Apple CarPlay.

Everything You Need To Know

How much does a Porsche 911 backdate cost? +

The cost of a bespoke Shoreline Porsche 911 backdate starts at approximately $375,000 for our 911 GTR Modern builds. Because every car is a custom commission, the final price will vary depending on your choice of interior materials, specific engine performance packs, and bespoke paint formulations.

Do I need to provide the donor car? +

No, you do not. Shoreline handles the sourcing of pristine, accident-free, structurally sound air-cooled donor cars as part of the build process to ensure our high quality standards are met. However, if you already own a suitable G-Model or 964, we can utilize it for your commission.

What is the best donor car for a backdate? +

The 1980s 3.2 Carrera (G-Series) and the 1990s 964 are widely considered the best donor cars. Unlike original 1970s cars, these later models feature galvanized steel chassis (meaning vastly superior rust protection), significantly more powerful engines, better suspension geometry, and highly reliable electrical systems.

How long does a Shoreline build take? +

A true body-off rebuild, modernization, and backdate is a meticulous process. While timelines vary based on your customization choices, builds typically require significant workshop time. We currently have build slots available for delivery in Q4 2026. Contact us to secure a slot.
