The Foundation of a Legend: Choosing Your Shoreline 911 Donor Chassis

Every masterpiece requires the right canvas. At Shoreline, that canvas is a genuine air cooled Porsche 911.

Because we build custom Porsche 911s from the ground up, the first and most critical decision in any commission is selecting the right donor car. While our bespoke bodywork and hand crafted interiors transform the aesthetics, the underlying chassis dictates the fundamental character of the drive.

For our GTR Classic, Modern, and Evolution builds, we exclusively utilize the two ultimate expressions of the air cooled era: the Porsche 964 (1989 to 1994) and the Porsche 993 (1994 to 1998). Both are phenomenal starting points, but they offer distinctly different analog experiences.

Here is how to choose the right foundation for your Shoreline 911.

The Porsche 964: The Traditionalists Scalpel

The 964 represents the bridge between vintage aesthetics and modern usability. It was the first 911 to introduce power steering and ABS, making it far more manageable than the G Series cars that preceded it.

However, the 964 retains the traditional semi trailing arm rear suspension. This gives the car that quintessential, classic 911 driving dynamic, a visceral, lively rear end that demands respect and rewards a skilled driver. When we pair a 964 chassis with our upgraded engine and tuned suspension, the result is a raw, sensory rich experience. It feels exactly like a classic 1970s sports car, but with the sharp, reliable edge of modern engineering.

Choose the 964 if: You want a more traditional, demanding, and raw analog driving experience.

The Porsche 993: The Pinnacle of Air Cooled Engineering

The 993 was the final iteration of the air cooled 911, and Porsche engineers left nothing on the table. The most significant departure from the 964 is the introduction of a sophisticated aluminum multi link rear suspension.

This engineering leap tamed the notorious snap oversteer of earlier 911s, providing massive mechanical grip, stability, and confidence, especially at high speeds or through sweeping corners. A Shoreline 911 built on a 993 donor chassis feels incredibly planted and refined. It is a highly capable, precision built machine that can devour canyon roads with total composure while still delivering that unmistakable air cooled flat six howl.

Choose the 993 if: You prioritize maximum grip, high speed stability, and a more refined, modernized driving dynamic.

Built The Way You Want It

Whether you prefer the lively, traditional soul of the 964 or the planted, sophisticated grip of the 993, there is no wrong choice.

At Shoreline, we believe the Porsche 911 is worth doing right. Once the donor is hand picked, the car is stripped to bare metal and rebuilt exactly to your specifications. From our switchable Tractive suspension systems to bespoke, upgraded powerplants, we ensure your chosen chassis performs beyond its original factory limits.

No two Shoreline 911s are alike. The only question is: which foundation will tell your story?
